rike_tikki_taviI went to see Pacific Rim last night
From a purely visual point it was all kinds of awesome. The kaiju were immpressive as hell and the jaegers were super cool though I'd have loved to see more of the Russian and the Chinese Jaeger.
Mako and Raleigh made for a wonderful team and Idris Elba as Stacker Pentecost was fantastic, too. I enjoyed his dynamic with Mako a lot.
It was also very cool that for once it was actually apparent that this was a threat to the entire world and it was fought by the entire world with Jaegers from all over and the Kaiju showing up all along the coast of the Pacific.
There were a few bits that could have been done better. As much as I enjoyed Mako, the movie failed the Bechdel test rather spectacularly. It would have had no impact on the story if Newt or Hermann or even the guy from the ops center had been a woman. Hell, they could have had one of the Australians be female. So that was a missed chance. And I want all the stories about the Russian Jaeger pilots and the Chinese triplets.
All in all it's loads better than many summer block busters. The characters are interesting and with lots of potential, the fight scenes were great, there lots of funny bits and I'm looking to fandom to write all the background stories in the world.
